๐Ÿ“‘ The Ultimate Guide to AI-First Job Search

Open roles at N26, Stack Overflow, Automattic, Webflow, Printful, Beachbody, Databricks, Remitly, EVPassport, Asana, Smartsheet, LastPass

Hello there ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I went hard on this one.

This is the ultimate guide on using AI for your job search marketing materials, aka your:

  1. Resume

  2. LinkedIn profile

  3. Cover letter

Make sure you save or bookmark this ๐Ÿ”– . Youโ€™ll be coming back.

Letโ€™s get into it:

Hi, Iโ€™m that guy (@christopherming on LinkedIn) that you probably found talking about how to use AI to land your next job.

My name is Chris Ming, dad of 3 and I live in Philadelphia, PA. I build education for companies like Clay and The Rundown, and have worked with companies like Noom, Reforge, Ramit Sethi, and others.

Here's what you'll learn today:

  • How to optimize your resume for AI screening without gaming the system

  • The LinkedIn strategy that gets you noticed by both algorithms and humans

  • Cover letter frameworks that position you as the solution, not the problem

  • Why your marketing materials need to work together as a system

...and more!

First, letโ€™s look at some open roles Iโ€™m excited about.

๐Ÿ’Ž 10+ High-Impact Remote Roles

๐Ÿšจ Just added! These remote roles were hand-picked yesterday at 10:15 AM EST. Get your application in early to stand out from the crowd.

๐Ÿ‘ป If you're sending out resumes and hearing nothing back, there's probably a fixable reason why.

I've been quietly helping people rewrite their job search materials, and the results have been nuts. Like Josh, a product director:

โ

Chris helped me reframe my experience to make my resume and LinkedIn profile more engaging and focused. Now Iโ€™m in process with four different companies!

Josh C.

Or Mary, a general counsel:

โ

Chris gave me something I didn't even know I'd been looking for; a new perspective on my career that completely changed how I market myself but also how I think about who I am and what I bring to the table.

Mary M.

๐Ÿ“ The Job Search Game Has Changed

So we have to change how we play. Get this right, and everything else makes sense. Get it wrong?

Youโ€™ll never break through.

Hereโ€™s what it boils down to:

AI scores your resume before a human ever sees it.

This is happening across companies and job portals. And the trend will continue to grow.

Gloria Dallas, Recruiting Lead at Snappr, says:

โ

Most applicant tracking systems use AI to rate how well your resume matches job descriptions. Sometimes these tools are wildly offโ€”100% match scores for completely wrong candidates, and strong candidates ranked at 40%.

So these scores can be totally wrong. But theyโ€™re still important to understand, because they decide who gets seen by actual humans.

The problem is that as job seekers, weโ€™re still writing resumes assuming thereโ€™s a human on the other side reading them first. So:

  • We say "CRM tools" instead of "Salesforce" when the job specifically mentions Salesforce.

  • We write "modern front-end frameworks" instead of "React" when React is in the job description.

Then we wonder why our applications disappear into black holes ๐Ÿค”

All of these mistakesโ€”and the AI-first reality of job applicationsโ€”point to a bigger shift in the job search game:

Your marketing materials aren't individual pieces.

They're components of a complete system.

Your job search marketing materials should work together in a step-by-step flow, creating a powerful combination that first gets you past AI screening, second catches the recruiters' attention, and finally positions you as the obvious, no-brainer choice for the role.

Hereโ€™s what the flow looks like:

Step 1: Resume optimization. Everything builds on this foundation. Speak the same language as job postings while telling a compelling story of impact.

Step 2: LinkedIn amplification. Transform your profile into a magnet for opportunities using your optimized resume content (plus a professional headshot that doesn't cost $300+).

Step 3: Cover letter connection. Position the company as the hero and yourself as the solution to their specific problems.

To be clear, Iโ€™m not talking about keyword stuffing or trying to game the system (although including some keywords is part of the game).

But I am saying that you need to speak the same language as both the AI screening your resume and the humans who wrote the job posting.

Fortunately, we can use AI to help us do all of it.

Let's break down each component:

๐ŸŽฏ 1/ Resume Optimization

Always start by optimizing your resume first.

Your optimized resume will feed into your LinkedIn profile, then your cover letter.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Do this first:

Give your AI tool context. You can do this by uploading:

Your current resume

Job description of roles youโ€™re targeting

Your LinkedIn headline and summary

โœ๏ธ Use this prompt

#CONTEXT#

You are an expert resume editor and ATS optimization specialist. You have access to my current resume, job descriptions of roles Iโ€™m targeting, and my LinkedIn headline and summary.

#OBJECTIVE#

Your job is to:

1. Edit and rewrite the Summary and Experience sections to be clear, concise, and ATS-optimized.

2. Incorporate relevant ATS keywords naturally so the resume surfaces in applicant tracking systems without sounding artificial or stuffed with keywords.

3. Whenever possible, make sure each bullet describes:

The impact: The result or outcome of the work.

The what: What was done.

The how: How it was achieved.

1. Ensure the output is polished and can be directly copied into the resume (no extra notes or explanations).

2. Only use information provided in the data. Do not invent or assume any new metrics or outcomes.

3. If there are insufficient metrics or specific outcomes, do not fabricate them, work only with the information given.

#INSTRUCTIONS#

Ignore any text labeled as notes. These guide your edits but should not be included in the output.

For the Summary and each Experience section:

Rewrite to focus on impact + what + how in each bullet or sentence.

Naturally include ATS-relevant keywords tied to the target role.

Keep the language organic and human-readable โ€” avoid robotic keyword stuffing.

Maintain the original structure and formatting so the content is ready to paste directly into the resume.

Do not include commentary, explanations, or additional notes โ€” just the finished text.

#EXAMPLE#

Example Input:

Role: Operations Manager

Original Bullets:

Managed a team of 10 FTEs to deliver $2M in annual revenue.

Improved process efficiency by 20% through automation.

Example Output:

Role: Operations Manager

Delivered $2M in annual revenue by managing a 10-person team and implementing process automation to improve efficiency by 20%.

If no metrics are available, simply rewrite the bullets for clarity and conciseness without adding new information.

#OUTPUT FORMAT#

Provide only:

The revised Summary

The revised Experience section

Do not use any special formatting (such as bold, italics, or color) in the output.

Resume bullets should be plain text, formatted exactly as they would appear in a standard resume.

Ensure the output is clean, neutral, and ready for direct copy-paste without style adjustments.

๐Ÿ’ผ 2/ Your LinkedIn Profile: The 24/7 Marketing Machine

Your LinkedIn profile works around the clock, even when you're sleeping.

Every recruiter, hiring manager, and potential connection is making snap judgments about whether you're the right fit based on what you post.

Now that your resume is optimized, let's turn your LinkedIn profile into a magnet for opportunities.

Let's fix the two biggest problems I see:

  • Profiles that don't leverage keywords recruiters search for

  • Terrible headshots

โœ๏ธ Profiles That Leverage Keywords Recruiters Search For (with AI)

Now let's fix your headline, summary, and work experience so recruiters actually want to talk to you.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Do this first:

Give your AI tool context by uploading:

Your updated resume

Job descriptions you're targeting

Your current LinkedIn headline and summary

โœ๏ธ Use this prompt in Claude:

#CONTEXT#

You are an expert career coach with a strong tech HR background, fluent in applicant tracking systems, LinkedIn optimization, and keyword strategy. You're known for providing blunt, honest, and actionable feedback that gets candidates results. You write in a professional but friendly tone, like a close friend who gives honest feedback.

#OBJECTIVE#

Analyze my LinkedIn profile data and deliver direct, specific, and actionable feedback to improve my LinkedIn marketability. Your goal is to ensure my LinkedIn profile aligns with my resume, enhances visibility to recruiters, and is easy to skim.

#INSTRUCTIONS#

1. Address all feedback directly to me using second person ("you").

2. Begin with an intro paragraph summarizing what's going well and what can be improved.

3. For each suggestion, explain WHY the change is recommended in 2-3 sentences.

4. For work experience, note that I should copy over my improved resume bullets and edit them for LinkedIn skimmability. Explain how LinkedIn is consumed differently (faster reading, more visual scanning).

5. Give ONE strong before/after example per section.

Remember: LinkedIn is consumed differently than resumes. People scan faster, recruiters look for specific keywords, and you have seconds to grab attention. Your profile should tell the same story as your resume but optimized for how people actually use LinkedIn.

The goal isn't perfection. It's making sure when someone lands on your profile, they immediately think: "We need to talk to this person."

๐Ÿ“ธ Get a Professional Headshot (Without the Professional Price)

Your LinkedIn photo is doing more heavy lifting than you think. People hire people, and whether we like it or not, snap judgments happen in seconds.

But professional headshots are expensive and scheduling a photoshoot during a job search feels overwhelming. SectaLabs lets you generate professional-looking headshots from your existing photos for $39 instead of $300+.

โœ๏ธ Use this workflow:

1. Photo selection is everything. Upload 8-10 photos where you look natural and relaxed. Don't force smiles in every photo.

2. Lighting matters more than you think. Use photos taken near windows or in well-lit spaces. Skip bathroom mirror selfies.

3. Include variety. Some photos looking directly at camera, others slightly off to the side.

4. Review every option. SectaLabs generates multiple headshots. Some look amazing, others look like your evil twin. Pick the ones that actually look like you.

5. Get a second opinion. Run your top 3 choices by someone who knows you well.

Pro tip: Works better if you're not wearing glasses in input photos. If you normally wear glasses for work, mention that in style preferences.

๐Ÿ“ฎ 3/ Your Cover Letter: Stop Making It About You

Finally, let's tackle the piece that ties everything together: your cover letter.

Here's the biggest mistake I see in cover letters: people make themselves the hero of the story.

"I'm passionate about..." "I want to grow my career..." "This role would help me achieve..."

Wrong protagonist.

You are not the hero of your cover letter. The company is. They're the ones with problems to solve, goals to hit, and challenges to overcome.

Your job is to position yourself as the guide who helps them win.

Think about it from their perspective: they're drowning in applications from people who want something from them. Then your cover letter lands in their inbox focusing on what you can do FOR them, not what they can do for you.

You can do all of this with an AI-powered cover lettering writing process.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Do this first:

Give your AI tool context by uploading:

Your updated resume

The specific job description you're targeting

โœ๏ธ Use this prompt in Claude:

#CONTEXT#

You are an expert career coach with a strong tech HR background, fluent in applicant tracking systems and keyword optimization. You're known for providing blunt, honest, and actionable feedback on cover letters. You have solid understanding of product, product marketing, engineering, design, HR, and legal/GC roles. You write in a professional but friendly tone, like a supportive friend who gives honest feedback.

#OBJECTIVE#

Analyze my materials and deliver the best possible feedback to improve my cover letter marketability. Your feedback should be direct, specific, and backed up with relevant suggestions. Make the cover letter as concise and specific as possible, removing any fluff.

#INSTRUCTIONS#

1. Address all feedback directly to me using second person ("you").

2. Begin with an intro paragraph summarizing what's going well and what can be improved. Always start with positive framing before constructive feedback.

3. Provide "What's going well" and "What can be improved" sections for high-level overview.

4. Deliver detailed feedback for the cover letter. For each suggestion, explain WHY the change is recommended in 2-3 sentences so I understand the logic.

5. Include a complete rewrite of the cover letter targeting the job description provided.

6. Triple check all feedback for accuracy and clarity.

The result: You'll get a detailed analysis of what's working and what isn't, plus a complete rewrite that positions the company as the hero and you as the solution to their specific challenges.

Key principle: Every sentence should answer the question "So what?" from the hiring manager's perspective. If it doesn't help them understand why you're the right person to solve their problems, cut it.

Your cover letter should read like you already understand their world and have ideas about how to make it better. That's the difference between "another applicant" and "someone we need to talk to."

๐Ÿ’ซ The Bottom Line

The future of job applications is understanding how job tracking systems work and creating materials that serve both AI and human reviewers.

To do that, your marketing materials need to work as a system:

Your resume gets you past the AI gatekeeper by speaking the same language as the job posting while telling a compelling story of impact.

Your LinkedIn profile amplifies that story 24/7, working as your always-on marketing machine with a professional headshot and optimized content.

Your cover letter ties it all together by positioning the company as the hero and you as the guide who can help them win.

AI tools can help you create all of this faster and more effectively than ever beforeโ€”so do it! But the real power comes from understanding that these aren't just individual documents. They're components of a complete personal marketing system.

The sooner you put this system to work, the faster youโ€™ll land the next role.
