🏖️ How This Product Manager Landed Her Dream Remote Role (From Mexico)

She tried everything:

She knew she was qualified. She had years of experience. But it felt impossible to break through.
“I settled down in Mexico City. I built my life here,” she told me.

Fast Forward 3 Months…
Esha had a job offer in hand for a Sr. Product Manager role at a US-based health tech company—exactly what she had been looking for.
Not only that:
The compensation package was terrific. Better than she hoped for.
“I got the offer and honestly, I’m pretty damn happy with it,” she confessed.

Let’s look at how she did it.
⚖️ She Leveraged Her Network (the Right Way)
Esha knew referrals were her best bet. But she didn’t just throw up an “open for work” post on LinkedIn and wait for the opportunities to magically appear in her inbox.
She actively reached out to former colleagues, business school classmates, and second-degree connections.
I call this “hand-to-hand combat.”
You have to get in the trenches and do the work.
At one point, she messaged a classmate she hadn’t spoken to in six years. That connection led directly to an introduction with a hiring manager.
👉 Do this:
Make a list of 20-30 people you’ve worked with in the past. Reach out and let them know you’re exploring new opportunities.
Don’t just ask for a job. Ask for advice, insights on their company, or referrals to people they know.
If you’re unsure how to word your message, use this template:
“Hey [Name], I hope you’re doing well! I’m currently looking for a new [Job Title] role and saw [Your Company] was hiring for this role [link to role]. I’d love to learn in [Company] would be a good fit - do you have 15 minutes to chat? Or if you’re busy, no worries, I can send over a few questions via email?”
🎯 She Was Hyper-Specific About Target Companies
One of the biggest mistakes I see job seekers make?
They apply everywhere.
“I’m interested in AI. And blockchain. My real passion is for fintech. But I’d be happy anywhere as long as I’m having positive impact on the world.”
No.
You have get hyper-focused.
To find the right companies, by definition there need to be wrong companies.
And that’s OK!
Esha focused on a specific list of companies that met her non-negotiables:
U.S.-based
HealthTech
Remote-first
Instead of chasing every open role, she deeply studied the intersection of this Venn diagram, engaged with employees, and monitored these job postings.
👉 Do this:
Pick 10-15 companies that align with your industry, mission, and flexibility needs.
Follow key employees and hiring managers on LinkedIn. Engage with their posts before reaching out.
Set Google Alerts for your target companies to stay informed on hiring news.
📖 She Did Heavy Research Before Every Conversation
Esha knew you have to show up to every conversation.
Obviously, this includes the interview. But it also includes:
Every catchup
Every coffee chat
Every informational interview
Before every conversation, she researched the company and the team’s recent projects.
For example, when interviewing with Jasper Health, she knew the company was focused on how it’d integrate with mental health—and steered the conversation towards that.
👉 Do this before any conversation:
Look up the person. Find common ground (past employers, shared connections, similar interests).
Research the company’s recent news, product updates, and mission.
Make sure you try the product. Go sign up!
Listen to podcasts with the CEO (especially if you're going to interview with them).
😄 She Followed Up (Even When It Felt Awkward)
So many people hesitate to follow up, especially if they’ve been struggling to close on a new role.
They’re worried they’ll seem pushy.
But in a competitive market, half the game is in your follow-up.
Esha knew this. So she didn’t hesitate. She checked in with recruiters, re-engaged with old connections, and even followed up multiple times when a hiring process stalled.
I call this “polite persistance.”
And it’s simple:
Always follow-up.
Always be polite.
(There’s never a reason to be rude.)
Her persistence paid off. A company that initially went silent ended up reaching out weeks later with a final-round interview.
👉 Do this:
If you don’t hear back within a week, send a polite follow-up:
“Hi [Recruiter’s Name], I wanted to check in on my application for [Job Title]. Let me know if there are any updates or if I can provide more information.”
If someone refers you but you don’t hear from the hiring manager, ask if they’d be comfortable nudging them.
