The Connection Newsletter 46 - Less you do

Hello!
This is edition #46 of
The Connection
, the weekly email I send family, friends, and future friends (hi!) Glad you're here.
I’m eagerly awaiting the final season of GoT ⌛️ Meanwhile, I’ve been thinking about this quote a lot:
“The more you know the less you do.”
I heard this in an interview with Jean Jacques Machado in the context of BJJ.
There are thousands of ways to win a competition, Machado explained, but the better he got, the fewer techniques he used. Instead of trying to get good at everything, he honed in on what was working and spent all his time sharpening those tools.
Until he finally whittled down his “tool kit” to a handful of techniques, like the rear naked choke (
) and the Ezekiel choke.
Here’s the most interesting part:
Mr. Machado added as a point of clarification (I’m paraphrasing here):
“but the only way to find your techniques is to first try and learn them all.”
“Once you learn a lot of moves, then you really understand why certain techniques work, and some don’t.”
His philosophy reminds me of the
, but it’s applicable in any career field you choose: strive to become an expert in your niche,
but the path to depth starts with breadth.
That’s it. Hope you have a great week. Onto the articles :)

Whether you work in restaurants or not, there are so many great takeaways on business and psychology in this article. Some highlights that stood out to me:
Delivery specific prices. “In an attempt to offset service fees, Munchiez charges $1 more for delivery than food in-store, due to the 30 percent price Uber Eats asks for.”
Delivery specific menus. “After some A/B testing, Canter’s Deli slimmed down its own online menu by 30 items a few years ago, due to long prep times, and foods like soup and milkshakes that did not travel well.”
Margin control. “When deciding what to put on menus, I work with restaurants to find items that they can afford to make 30 percent [lower] profits on. So if not steaks, then how about salads and burgers?”
Higher checks. “The family-owned restaurant also finds customers spend 50 percent more on average on delivery orders than dine-in, due to upselling and the placing of group orders for offices.”
Strategy: Be everywhere. “When the recession hit, we needed to find a new way to bring people in. We quickly realized each delivery service had its own set of customers, so we wanted to be on all of them.”

Speaking of restaurants…
.

. So many parallels to Robert Moses (early career adversity, skill in managing bureaucracies, etc.) which is probably why I enjoyed it. Plus he’s in business with David Chang and Gary Vaynerchuk, too other entrepreneurs I admire.
---
. These scooters just aren’t built to last.
---
. Gillian Morris breaks down the contents of the single bag she uses to travel the world. I noticed I’ve been adding more and more to my suitcase, and got a ton of great ideas here to drastically cut back.
---
. I’m trying to take sleep more seriously. These notes from a Joe Rogan podcast with neuroscientist Dr. Matthew Walker were incredibly insightful. Takeaways:
“Sleep is the greatest legal performance-enhancing drug that most people are probably neglecting”
One hour of iPhone use before bed will delay the onset of melatonin production by about 3 hours (your peak melatonin levels will also be about 50% less)
Your brain needs to drop its temperature 2-3 °F in order to sleep (so keep your room as cold as you can tolerate)
Men who sleep 5-6 hours a night will have a level of testosterone 6-10 years their senior
Humans beings are the only species that deprive themselves of sleep for no apparent gain

Thanks for reading!
